Engraving taken from the more than famous album engraved by Antonio Visentini from Canaletto's drawings “Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores, ex Antonii Canal Tabulis XXXVIII. Aere expressi ab Antonio Visentini. In partes tres distributi.” This edition is the first of 38 views, and complements the previous one printed in 1735 of only 16 sheets. Compared to the first state above the Doge's Palace, several parallel dashes are added; lozenge strokes are added in the cloud on the left; the sky strokes toward the Salute dome are united; the marks in the water are thickened. Succi's “Le Prospettive di Venezia dipinte da Canaletto e incise da Antonio Visentini”: “The sheet is part of the early group, although in its scope it was one of the last: the rendering of the waves is quite evolved and the changes made to the plate in 1741-42 were not significant.The corresponding painting by Canaletto seems datable to 1729-30.”.Antonio Visentini (Venice 1688-1782) was a painter, engraver and architect. His name is closely linked to that of Canaletto, with whom he collaborated, in the production of his most famous work, precisely the 38 views in perspective. Like Canaletto he almost always worked under the patronage of Joseph Smith and the publishing house of Giambattista Pasquali: for this publisher he also designed and engraved the logo with the figure of Minerva “Litterarum Felicitas”; with the same he collaborated in the elaboration of Guicciardini's Istoria d'Italia, producing the magnificent headpieces representing the Islands of the Lagoon of Venice and the capilettera representing views of Venetian Fields. For Zatta, on the other hand, he engraved the cutaways of the magnificent volume relating to the Basilica Marciana “L'Augusta Ducale Basilica.”. As a painter he created in collaboration with Zuccarelli two fantasy landscapes and frescoed a series of architectural perspectives for the Villa Valmarana in Vicenza, animated by Giandomenico Tiepolo's macchiette. As an architect he built for Smith the new facade of the Mangilli Palace at Santi Apostoli in Venice and the Palazzetto Giusti at Ca' d'Oro. He was professor of perspective at the Venice Academy, occupying the chair previously held by Gianfranco Costa.
