12mo [16 x 11 cm]; xii, 292 pp, folding frontis map with old repair at fold, other map in facsimile, tables. later cloth covers, gilt title lettering on leather spine label, light foxing on some leaves, very good+ in unworn sound and solid binding. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. A popular work, the first edition of 1806 had one map, included in this second edition. Some copies of the second edition had only this map, while others had two maps, this copy appears to have been issued with only one map but the second is supplied in facsimile. The publisher also issued an abridged edition in 1807 which was 96 pages and no map. Sabin 31265. Welch 8. Humphreys 563. The author, who had been director of mines near Cracow, Poland and later of mines in Peru, travelled from Buenos Aires to Lima, described the mines and production methods, as well as government, viceroyalties, the indigenous peoples including Abipons, Tucuman, Charcas, topography, geology, volcanoes, vegetable productions, imports and exports, etc, on his travels through Chili, Peru, La Plata. The book includes chapters on Paraguay and Quito, Ecuador, and an appendix on the Spanish colonies in South America.
