He arrived at Port Natal in 1854 and began to familiarize himself with the Zulu language with his efforts resulting in the compilation of a Dictionary and Grammar. Durban at that time had 400 houses and 1,200 white inhabitants. During his tenure, Colenso became embroiled in religious controversy, mainly due to his "liberal" views such as respecting the native practice of polygamy amongst native converts.
