About The Book: This book is the outcome of my research work on the topic Politics & Language: A Case Study of Goa. I have been a keen observer of language movement in Goa since 1985-1986. Language unites as well as divides the people on the political plane. The anti-integration forces traditionally sided with the Portuguese rulers in pre-Liberation Goa. They played no role in the freedom struggle of Goa. They became the vociferous proponents of the distinct identity of Goa in the post-Liberation era. The vested interests replaced the Devanagari with the Roman script of the Konkani language and stunted its origin, growth, and development in the territory. Konkani, with its Devanagari script, is the official language of the State of Goa. Konkani is included in the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India. The book is a historic account of the linguistic affairs of Goa based on truth, reason, and reality. About the Author: PRADIP NARAYAN MASKE (born in 1964, Ponda, Goa) has been engaged in teaching at Goa Vidyaprasarak Mandal’s G.G.P.R. College of Commerce & Economics, affiliated to Goa University, for the last 36 years. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree for the thesis ‘The Politics and Language: A Case Study of Goa’ in 2000 by Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune, India. He was designated as Reader on 18 July 2001 and re-designated as associate professor in political science on 14 May 2010. He is an ex-member of the academic council of Goa University and a life member of the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA), New Delhi. He is a founder member of educational, cultural, and cooperative bodies in Goa. He is currently the editor of Atharva (ISSN 0973-9475), a monthly of contemporary studies & analyses published in print edition (2006 to 2017) and online edition https://atharvaonlineedition.com from Ponda, Goa.
