Ecke bestossen, sonst gutes Exemplar. Schuber aufgeplatzt. - Text engl. und ital. - The theme "Life between nature and artifact: the project and the environmental challenge", favourably received and subsequently approved by the old governing body, is most certainly rich in interest and in implication. Man's home is no longer his village, town or city. His dwelling is the whole planet: here lies the dialectic between what man creates and dominates, and nature, by which man is both dominated and created - issues which arouse the immediate interest and the involvement of artists, scientists, intellectuals and the general public alike. The complex relationship between modern man and his existence, between nature and all that is conceived and created by man, must be investigated through critical reflection, and will be one of the "thinking points" of the near future. The creator who often becomes his creation's slave: this is the characteristic feature of our culture. Nevertheless, nature does, at times, surrender itself. At others, it reacts. And its reaction to attempts at tampering can be of mighty proportions. So, in the intricate mesh of these contemporary issues, the theme of this XVIII Triennale centres on the tension between the creativity of the project and a challenge conditioned by its horizons.
