Descrizione

The first bibliography in the field. An extremely precise, detailed account of publications in Old French. Begins with Levesque de la Ravalliere's edition of the songs of Thibaut de Navarre, the first text ever printed in Old French, and continues until 1874, the year before the Societe des Anciens Textes Francais commenced operations. Scholarly introduction. Includes the first editions of the Chanson de Roland, Aliscans, Raoul de Cambrai, the works of Marie de France, Baudoin and Jean de Conde, Wace, Raoul de Houdenc, Gautier d'Arras, Adam de la Halle, Chretien de Troyes, Joinville, Gautier de Coincy, the fabliaux, fables, hagiographies, verse chronicles, bestiaries, and hundreds of others. Includes precise transcription of title-pages, collation with detailed account of contents, information about the number of copies printed (kinds of paper, formats), cross-references to relevant bibliographies, scholarly notes. Entries average about 500 words in length, but are sometimes far longer. Separate indexes of authors, titles, editors, publishers, printers, collections, provenances, places of publication, and binders. 13 high-resolution full-page facsimile plates. The author, William Cole, holds a doctorate from Harvard University and has written many scholarly articles and books about books and prints. Edition limited to 300 numbered copies printed on fine wove paper and signed by the author. 4to. Original fine wove paper wraps, printed in red and black. New.
