"From July to December 2000, France takes on the presidency of the European Union, and I am particularly happy to have, for this occasion, join the EU Japan Fest Association, which has shown the best aspects of Japanese culture in the major European cultural events since 1993. The G8 Summit and the Europe - Japan Summit , both taking place in Japan in July 2000, are an opportunity for the Association to achieve a project which is dear to me: European Eyes on Japan. This Photographic project, set up with French critic Gabriel Bauret, enables great European photographers to display their view of Japan. Five of thenm travelled through the regions of Okinawa and Kyushu on a quest for their originality. I therefore pay my respects to the sensitive and throough works of Stephane Duroy, Gerard Rondeau, Anders Petersen, Mark Power, and Robert Van der Hilst. I thank GIP Tokyo and the EU Japan Fest Association for implementing this project. The European Eyes on Japan exhibition helps us to better understand the diversity and profound unity of the Japanese culture, and to grasp the meaning of the ineffable and the impreceptible, among its charms." - Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, Amabassador, French Embassy in Japan
