Very good condition for age - The second fascicule of the Corpus lusomni Autiquorum for Oxford appeared in 1931, but it by no means completed the publication ol Oxford vases, even in the current state of the collection. Since 1931 the collection has been considerably enlarged by gift and by purchase, but especially as the result ol the generosity of Sir John Beazley, in whose honour an exhibition comprising only his gilts to the museum was mounted in 1967, and by the purchase of a large number of the vases from Captain Spencer-Churchill�s collection at Northwick Park in 1965. These events were marked by the publication of selective illustrated catalogues. -- The third fascicule inaugurates what is hoped to be a new series. It includes all Athenian black figure amphorae and hydriae, complete or near complete. A few examples of these shapes were published in CVA ii but without the profile drawings which have become customary in recent corpora. These drawings are supplied here at the end of this volume. -- The photographs are by the Museum photographer, Olive Godwin, and her staff; the drawings by the Department draughtswoman, Pat Clarke. Of the staff of the Department of Antiquities Ann Brown and Michael Vickers have been particularly helpful in arranging access to the vases and their photography. Alan Johnston ( University College, London ) has kindly offered some comments on the dipinti and graffiti, quoted here. -- The system of catalogue numbers is slightly confusing and should be explained. The main series are expressed in years, but between 1896 and 1908 Greek vases were catalogued with a G. prefix to a serial number. These included some previously catalogued by years. Gardner�s 1893 catalogue, supplemented in JHS xxiv ( 1904 ) , 293-316, with pis. 7-9 ( nos. 501-26 ) , and in JHS xxv ( 1905 ) , 65-80, with pis. 1-4 ( nos. 527-52 ) , and continued for some years in an unpublished catalogue, gave simple serial numbers to all vases, which in some publications are prefixed by V. It is these serial numbers alone that Beazley used and which are therefore given priority here, but for some vases the G. number and year are added in parenthesis, where appropriate. Vases from the Fortnum Bequest have their own serial numbers.
