8vo [19 x 13 cm]; xviii, 642 pp, engraved map frontis by J. Archer, numerous engraved illustrations, including 3 signed by J. W. Whimper, index. contemporary full grained black morocco, gilt-ruled, raised bands, gilt title lettering on spine, marbled edges and endpapers, bookplate of Paddy Latham, minor foxing but mostly clean, edges lightly rubbed, very good sound copy. A picture of this book is Freeman and Weertheimer 57. The author is primarily known as a marine biologist and the writer of many famous books in that area. He also wrote several book on the Middle East, this one based in part on the texts of Botta, Layard and Rawlinson and on his own studies. Many of the illustrations are from the author's sketches of objects in the British Museum.
