With a great profusion of finely engraved plates, 70 in total, showing the various ancient monuments of Rome, and with a superb multi-folding plan of the geographical location of the monuments throughout the city, a good number of the engravings are by Giambattista Piranesi, others by Petrini, Rinaldi, Pronti, Albacini, Bruni, Cunego and Bossi, engraved headpieces in each volume, engraved title-pages, collated complete with all engravings called for. Edizione: with 70 finely engraved full page plates of the ancient architecture of rome and an excellent map showing the location of the monuments throughout the city. abbot ridolfino venuti was one of the founders of the accademia etrusca di cortona in 1726, and became its secretary. he was elected a member of the royal society in 1757. he designed a map of ancient rome in 1763, and, skilled in ancient languages, became prefect of the albani family museum in rome. his brother niccol? marcello was one of the first excavators of herculaneum, and another brother, filippo, was also an archeologist who wrote on the monuments of bordeaux.<br> giovanni battista piranesi was an italian classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of rome. as many of the engravings included in the book are by piranesi, it is important to note his contribution as an archaeologist, which was acknowledged at the time as he had been elected to the society of antiquaries of london. his influence of technical drawings in antiquarian publications is often overshadowed. he left explanatory notes in the lower margin about the structure and ornament. most ancient monuments in rome were abandoned in fields and gardens. piranesi tried to preserve them with his engravings. to do this, piranesi pushed himself to achieve realism in his work. a third of the monuments in piranesi's engravings have disappeared, and the stucco and surfacings were often stolen, or restored and modified clumsily. piranesi's precise observational skills allow people to experience the atmosphere in rome in the eighteenth century. piranesi may have recognised his role of disseminating remarkable information through meaningful images. he became the director of the portici museum in 1751. wiki
