Description

8vo; 432 pp, color frontis, color plates, other illus, pictorialend papers, vocabulary of sea terms. original pictorial cloth, pictorialspine, light shelf wear, very good copy of a later printing of this travel classic. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author sailed aboard the brig Pilgrim on August 1835 from Boston to the California coast. His observations of the poor treatment of merchant sailors at the hands of unconcerned owners and tyrannical ship masters lead to action by the US congress and the improvement of the lot of American seamen. Sabin I, 18488: 'If not thte most widely read book on California, this ranks exceedingly hing on such a list'. His description of California is our only trusworthy account before the 1849 gold rush, especially for its description of ranching and social life in Mexican times.
