8vo [23.5 x 15 cm]; xxxii, 730, [ii, errata], [ii, ads for author's works], 16 [ads] pp, over 380 illustrations from drawings, tables, index. original blind-stamped cloth, gilt title lettering on spine, light shelf wear, internal hinge lightly cracked but firm, else a near fine copy, interior is clean and without the usual foxing, unmarked. A picture of this book is available upon request by em A. J. Downing described Loudon as 'the most distinguished gardening author of the age'. 'His Suburban Horticulturist (1842) set the standards and much of the style of the new middle-class Victorian garden' (Hugh Johnson). Catalogue of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society 191. A monumental and comprehensive work covering all aspects including tools, methods, techniques, use of insects and about any topic a gardener of the time would need. Organic gardeners of today could learn much from his suggestions.
