Description

8vo., Second Edition, with illustrations in the text and facsimile signatures on endpapers; black cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt and silver, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. First published in 1941, this is Allingham's first non-fiction work, an autobiographical account of wartime in the village of Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex, where she lived with husband Youngman Carter who illustrated this work. For this second edition, the endpapers are printed with facsimile signatures of the residents and tradespersons of the village taken from Allingham's own copy of the original edition. The work has become increasingly valuable as a detailed, first-hand account of a time when a German invasion was considered imminent, potentially placing the population of Essex in the front line, and when the outcome of the war was to say the least uncertain. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
