Description

8vo [24 x 16 cm]; 320 pp, illustrations on plates, illustrations in text, maps, index. original cloth, gilt spine title lettering, dj (price clipped), fine, clean and unmarked condition. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. A comprehensive and definitive work on these gardeners, plant hunters and travellers. They supervised some of the great gardens of the period, introducing many new plants into Britain. Their collections formed the basis of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the first museum in Britain. The elder Tradescant went on collecting trips to Europe, diplomatic trips to Russia and an expedition to Algeria while the younger went to North America as far as Virginia. The book includes a reproduction of the complete texts of their own plants lists of 1629 to 1656, each plant with its modern name, making this a useful work for the study of plant history as well.
