Based on early letters by an eyewitness, the work describes a French attempt to establish a slave trading centre on the Tanganyika (now Tanzania) coast at Kilwa, and describes in detail the Afro-Arab society, trade, politics in a period not previously described. Largely from the pen of a surgeon turned slave trade but with an extensive introduction providing historical perspective.
