8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; xxxvi, 196 pp, 6 plates including frontis, folding map at end, bibliog, index. original blue cloth with gilt vignette on covers, gilt spine title lettering, spine faded, small stain on rear cover, interior fine and clean in good cover. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The four travellers are William Beawes, Garlard Roberts, Bartholomew Plaisted and John Carmichael. Carruthers provides an excellent and extensive historical perspective in his introduction, an important contribution to understanding the great routes between Europe and Asia, the route through the Syrian Desert to Persia, being described in detail.
