8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; xxxvi, 196 pp, 6 plates including frontis, folding colored map at end, bibliog, errata page, index. original blue cloth with gilt vignette on covers, gilt spine title lettering, spine lightly faded but gilt bright, light stain on inside corner of first leaves, else very good copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The four travelers are William Beawes, Garlard Roberts, Bartholomew Plaisted and John Carmichael. Carruthers provides an excellent and extensive historical perspective in his introduction, an important contribution to understanding the great routes between Europe and Asia, the route through the Syrian Desert to Persia, being described in detail.
