Hedrick-Woodburn: History of Horticulture in America p.489: "From the time of its first printing in 1846 down to 1900, the fruit book in America most used by fruit growers, nurserymen and later in colleges and schools was John Jacobs Thomas' The American Fruit Culturist." The first edition was a slim paper-covered volume with 30 woodcuts which became a popular and useful guide. It was subsequently expanded and is one of those books that got better over time. Most of the other editions did not have the fine colored frontispiece of fruit that this edition has. This edition has an extensive listing of fruit varieties and descriptions.
