12mo [19 x 13 cm]; [ii], 272 pp, 6 folding color plates (chromolithographs) including frontis, numerous other illustrations including full-page, index. original green cloth, decorated in black and gilt, gilt lettering, edges lightly rubbed, clippings from other sources on plants pasted on endpapers, internal hinges cracking but firm, a nice clean copy, very good. A picture of this book is available upon The author was a popular gardening author of the Victorian period. The color plates are of flowers and the many other illustrations include greenhouses and plans, conservatories, equipment, Victorian vases, plants, etc. This was first published in 1873 and reprinted a number of times, apparently unchanged, although the later printings had only the colored frontis but without the other fine colored plates.
