Description

8vo [22 x 15 cm]; viii, 444 pp. original brown cloth, spine faded but gilt title lettering clear, short tear at spine end, bookplate of E. H. Freeman on endpaper, free endpaper with hole, but a clean very good copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The author meant this book as a supplement to his Travels in Central Asia, but is independent on its own, covering Dervishes, Hadjis, Turkomans, caravans, tent life, the court of Khiva, housing, food, dress, Kungrat, Tartars, Bokhara, the slave trade and slave life, Turkestan, Tuanian and Iranian peoples, Central Asian literature, England and Russian rivalry in Central Asia, etc. Yakushi V09. Sykes (History of Exploration) 246: 'a celebrated journey in disguise across Persia to Bokhara and Samarkand'. His description of the peoples and their customs is most interesting.
