. TUNICA TESTIS VAGINALI MICHAEL GIRARDI (1731 - 1737). IN - FOLIO, M. PELLE OTTOCENTESCA. (VIII), XXXV, (1) PP. 1 F. FRA LE PP. 210 - 211 (MONITA E IMPRIMATUR), RITRATTO A PIENA PAGINA DELL' AUTORE FINEMENTE INCISO IN RAME E 42 ECCELLENTI TAVOLE ANATOMICHE PURE INCISE IN RAME SU DISEGNI DEL PIAZZETTA. ALCUNE LIEVI RIFIORITURE IN POCHE PAGINE DI TESTO, MA BELL' ESEMPLARE ABBONDANTE DI MARGINI NEL SUO STATO ORIGINALE DI CONSERVAZIONE. PRIMA EDIZIONE DELL' OPERA MEDICA PIÙ BELLA E PIÙ RARA USCITA DAI TORCHI DELLA CELEBRE OFFICINA BODONIANA. SCONOSCIUTA AL DE LAMA E AL BROOKS. "THE WORK BELONGS TO THE BEST OF ITS TIME (AS HALLER RECOGNIZED, II, 715), NOT ONLY AS REGARDS THE DISSECTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS, BUT ALSO AS TO THE VERY ELABORATE COMMENTARY. THE PICTURES DEAL WITH THE FACIAL MUSCLES, THE BASE OF THE BRAIN AND OTHER PARTS OF THE BRAIN, THE ORGANS OF SMELL AND HEARING, THE PHARYNX, THE BREAST, THE HEART, THE DIAPHRAGM WITH THE BEGINNING OF THE THORACIC DUCT, THE STOMACH, THE LIVER, THE INTESTINES, THE PANCREAS, THE ILEOCECAL VALVE, THE BLADDER, THE MUSCLES OF THE PERINEUM, AND THE GENITALS. COVOLI'S PICTURES REPRESENT THE BREASTS, THE TUNICS OF THE TESTICLE AND A SIX MONTHS' FETUS. THE FIRST SEVENTEEN PLATES WERE BY SANTORINI; TWO OF THE LAST FOUR PLATES BELONGED TO THE ANATOMIST GIOVANNI BATTISTA COVOLI. THE OTHER TWO BELONGED TO THE EDITOR, MICHELE GIRARDI (1731 - 1797), A PROFESSOR OF ANATOMY IN PARMA, WHO WROTE A COMMENTARY FOR SANTORINI'S PLATES. AL THE TWENTY - ONE PRINTS OF THE WORK ARE DONE IN A LIGHT CRAYON EFFECT WHICH, HOWEVER, DOES NOT IMPAIR THE ANATOMIC CLARITY OF THE PRINTS, BUT EVEN BRINGS OUT WELL THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TISSUES. EACH PLATE IS ACCOMPANIED BY AN OUTLINE PLATE WHICH IS MARKED WITH REFERENCE LETTERS. THE SEVENTEEN PLATES BY SANTORINI HAVE A RULED MARGIN AT THE TOP AND ON THE SIDE, BUT HAVE NO SIGNATURES OF THE ARTISTS. THEY WERE DRAWN BY GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIAZZETTA (1682 - 1754), WHO MADE THE COPPERS FOR TASSO'S GERUSALEMME LIBERATA, VENEZIA, 1754." (CHOULANT & FRANK, HISTORY AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF ANATOMIC ILLUSTRATION, PP. 262 - 64). "SANTORINI DIED BEFORE THE COMPLETION OF THESE ANATOMICAL PLATES WHICH HE INTENDED TO BE HIS CHEF D' OEUVRE. THIS ELEGANTLY PRINTED VOLUME IS THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT MEDICAL BOOK PRINTED BY THE CELEBRATED GIAMBATTISTA BODONI FOR THE DUKE OF PARMA" (GARRISON & MORTON, MEDICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, 399.1). HALLER, BIBLIOTHECA ANATOMICA, II, PP. 714 - 15: "PULCHERRIMUM OPUS.". HIRSCH, BIOGRAPHISCHES LEXICON DER HERVORRAGENDEN AERZTE, V, P. 20. BLAKE, EIGHTEENTH CENTURY PRINTED BOOKS IN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF MEDICINE, P. 401. HEIRS OF HIPPOCRATES, 788. SALLANDER, BIBLIOTHECA WALLERIANA, 8476. NORMAN LIBRARY OF SCIENCE & MEDICINE, 1888.
