The surveys to produce a national railroad provided some of the most important natural history, geographical and ethnological information that has ever been made available and resulted in the important 12 volume set, of which this is volume IV, complete in itself. It consists of a report on the botany of the expedition, soil and productions along the route by J. M. Bigelow, cactaceae by George Englemann and J. M.
