Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband stark berieben, Knicke im Cover, handschriftliche Anmerkung auf Titelblatt, beiliegend einige Materialien zum Autor (Anknding eines Vortrags, Todesanzeige, Einladung und Programm zum Gedenkgottesdienst) / binding heavily rubbed, creases in cover, handwritten note on title page, some materials about the author enclosed (announcement of a lecture, obituary, invitation and program for memorial service). - Pindar has for centuries been the least understood and appreciated of the great classical poets, for the type of composition by which he is now chiefly representedthe ode written on commission to praise a victorious athletedoes not seem to fit our notions of what a lyric poem should be. This book by D. S. Came-Ross sets out to recover Pindar as a vital presence in the Western tradition. Through critical discussion, comparison with more familiar poets past and present, and selective translation, Came-Ross demonstrates the craftsmanship and beauty of a Pindaric ode. The first chapter examines the form of the victory odean inherited form with its required, recurrent featuresand shows how, in Pindar's hands, its disparate elements compose a complex, harmonious whole. The rest of the book consists of close readings of a dozen odes illustrating different aspects of Pindar's genius and the wide range of experience that this seemingly limited genre can cover. Written to convey to the general reader the skill and power of Pindar's poetry, this book assumes no knowledge of the specialist literature. However, a number of Came-Ross's interpretations do break fresh critical ground, and thus the book will also be of interest to scholars in the field. / CONTENTS Foreword by John Herington Preface List of Abbreviations I The Pindaric Victory Ode II A Poet and his Paces Isthmian 6: The Poem as Libation Olympian 3: The Meaning of Victory Olympian 14: The Graces Nemean 3: Out of the Strong Came Forth Sweetness III Interlude: An Ode Takes Shape (Nemean 10) IV The Harmonies of Love and Rule Pythian 9: Qui Regna Amore Pythian 1: A Rich and Lordly Crown V Questions of Interpretation Nemean 4: Feigned Foes and Singers Outre-Tombe Isthmian 8: A Myth and Its Occasion Nemean 7: Truth and the Measure of Praise Nemean 11: A Client Who Did Not Fit the Convention VI Pythian 8: The Fall of the Leaf Selected Bibliography Index.
