8vo [26 x 17 cm]; xi, 611 pp, 20 lithographed plates including hand colored frontis, other plates are chromolithographs or tinted, 32 wood engravings, folding map showing author's route in red (map untorn), index. original green pictorial & blind-stamped cloth, with gilt picture in decorative border on cover, gilt title lettering on spine and cover, some plates moderately foxed, near fine copy in bright cover. A picture of this book is available upon request by ema Abbey Travel 530. BMNH I, 69. The US edition had no plates or map. Nerhood 238: 'British scientist-explorer-artist provides sketches of Siberian people and scenery after a long visit, 1848-55. He believes himself to have been the first westerner in many of the areas and he writes a detailed account with special emphasis on travel difficulties, weather conditions, resources and the manners and customs of the people'. DNB: 'most valuable as representations of places hitherto unknown to Europeans'.
