Cologne, Maternus Cholinus & Jacobus Soterem, 1555. Ad I: The Corpus Areopagiticum, comprising the tracts on Celestial Hierarchy, on the Divine Names, on Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, on Mystical Theology, and various letters, ascribed over the centuries to various authors, composed in the 5th century. The present new Latin translation is the work of the erudite French theologian Joachim Perion (1499-1559), first published in 1556. The influence of these writings on medieval scholastics was enormous, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventura, Marsilius Ficino, Pico della Mirandola, and many more relied on them. The background is Christian as well as neo-Platonic, aiming at a synthesis of the two views. - VD 16 D 1851; Index aurel. 153.982; Hoefer XXXIX, 614. Ad II: First edition of these catechetical sermons by the eminent theologian Jacob Schoepper (born c. 1512-1516, died 1554), from Dortmund. They were published posthumously by his friend Johann Lambach. Schoepper was an exponent of a line of reformed catholicism, focussing on education; to this purpose he also wrote biblical plays to be performed at grammar schools. - Old ms. inscription on title dated 1683, some light browning. - VD 16 S 3779.
