Description

Woodcut printer's marks and initials. 4 in 3 vols. (vol. 3-4 bound as one). Folio. 17th century mottled calf, gilt-tooled, marbled endpapers three edges red (rebacked and repaired, crossed name on titles, blind library stamps on first and last leaves). From the collection of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland (lot 10870 in his sale, 1882). Basel, Johann Herwagen the Elder, 1560. First complete edition. Sabellicus (1436-1506), scholar and historian from Venice, was a pupil of Julius Pompominus Laetus. Later he became Professor of Eloquence at Udine and Venice, and was appointed keeper of the Biblioteca Marciana after the publication of his history of Venice "Decades rerum Venetarum" (1487).
