Description

No marks or inscriptions. No creasing to covers or to spine. A clean very tight copy with bright boards and no bumping to corners. Dust jacket not price clipped with rubbing to rear edge and small nicks to upper and lower edges. 253pp. When the author first went to Moscow (in June 1956), as correspondent for the Italian paper Corriere della Sera, he was welcomed by the Russians, particularly among the less satisfied element of Soviet society. Suddenly however, he found that he was being dropped by one friend after another. Soon he was sent for by the head of the department responsible for foreign correspondents and vigorously reproved for articles which in fact he had never written. Denial was useless, and thenceforward he found that he was excluded from all press conferences, deprived of 'official' information, and as he expressed it, was sent 'into orbit'. This book is the story of his life during those years …and of how he came to love and pity the people of Moscow.
