12mo [20 x 13 cm]; xiii, 318 pp, tinted lithograph frontis of Zoolah warrior, plus 2 plates of insects, other illustrations of game animals, appendix of list of Annulosa, principally insects, collected by author. contemporary half calf, black spine label with gilt lettering, gilt line decorations, marbled boards, rubbed, very slight foxing on few leaves, very good copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Mendelssohn II, p. 6: "A journal of an eight months' sporting expedition through the Eastern Province to the Orange and Vaal Rivers, Waterboer's country and thence in a north-easterly direction to the junction of the Mariqua and Limpopo Rivers as far as Moselekatse's old capital in what was afterwards known as the Transvaal." The party hunted through the Hantam' district eventually arriving at Campbell where they met Livingstone, who had just returned from Mobatze, suffering from an encounter with a lion. "Many valuable botanical and geological notes will found in the work. . . The main interest of the volume, centres on the description of the game animals, and there are a number of well-drawn illustrations of the heads and horns of various species of antelopes met with in the course of the expedition".
