Description

A LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK ABOUT A WOMAN BULLFIGHTER. 211 pp. plus publisher's catalogue. A "Spanish novel" about a woman bullfighter, illustrated throughout with charming wood-engravings by Octave Guillonnet. Jean de La Hire (1878-1956), the author, was a nephew of sculptor Aristide Maillol. He left his native French Catalonia at an early age, hoping for literary immortality on Paris. While he never won any prestigious prizes, he achieved great success as a popular writer, finally churning out over six hundred books--many of which sold extremely well. La Torera is among his earliest works, written while the author still had serious literary pretensions. ONE OF ONLY TEN LARGE-PAPER COPIES PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER AND SIGNED BY THE PUBLISHER. 8vo. Beautifully bound in half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, top edge gilt, silk ribbon page marker, original wraps preserved. Spine faded, else FINE AND BRIGHT WITH NO DEFECTS.
