Description

Illustrated cardboard cover in colour, 165 x 210mm., 288pp., colour illustration throughout. ISBN 9789078681090. 1 June 2010. Sotheby's for Rijksakademie artist' endownment fund. 'Global Contemporary, Artists for Artists' provides an up-to-date overview of contemporary art from all continents. Over one hundred artists - affiliated with the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam - donated exceptional works of art to support research and experimentation by current and future generations of talented artists at the beginning of their international careers. The 1870 Rijksakademie, with artists such as Breitner, Mondrian, Constant and Appel, has in the last decade gained a worldwide reputation as a top institute for - mostly graduated - young, professionals. Some 2,000 artists apply annually for a two-year work period in their own studios, homes in Amsterdam, in technical workshops and the collections whose roots go back to the 17th century. Especially now that art and artists are under pressure, this generous manifestation of solidarity by ?artists for artists? is of great significance. Alongside the State and Patronage, artists themselves are taking charge of the future. The Society of - by inspiration and friendship linked - artists now has offshoots from Amsterdam to Brussels, London, Berlin, Paris, Moscow, Seoul, New York, Mexico City and many other focal points in the visual arts. A small sampling of the artists: Carlo Amorales, Yael Bartana, Tjebbe Beekman, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Richard Deacon, Marlene Dumas, Alicia Framis, Michel Francois, Antony Gormley, Folkert de Jong, Hans Op de Beeck, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Michael Raedecker, Berend Strik, Luc Tuymans en Marijke van Warmerdam
