Description

Two Volumes. First American Edition from the much improved revised English Edition of the previous year. 8vo, original paper back gray boards, with paper labels, uncut and largely unopened. Enclosed in a fine folding slipcase box. Internally fine and visually a remarkable clean copy in original condition. Minor vertical split to the spine of the first volume, (not affecting the tightness of the binding) and minor cover soiling and light wear to the boards, but very rare in boards and an excellent copy.

Edizione: a major contribution to the literature on colour, and dyeing, and very rare in original printer's boards. american books of this period in boards are rare in general. bancroft was an american-born physician who spent most of his life abroad. self-educated, and with the encouragement of benjamin franklin, he embarked on a career as a man of letters. he went on to become a member of the royal society & the college of surgeons, and incidentally, a double agent during the revolutionary war.<br> having discovered the dyeing properties (yellow) from the inner bark of the american black oak, he introduced and marketed the dye in europe and he published this classic book whose theories were in advance of their time.
