Sm. 4to., with an engraved portrait frontispiece; contemporary calf, sides with floral frame border in gilt enclosing another in blind, within which is a central decorative floral panel in blind, back gilt with four raised bands, compartments tooled in gilt to a floral design, leather label, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, a remarkably clean copy in wholly representative period binding. One of the most popular books of the seventeenth century, Quarles' engaging prose work was first published in 1640. Numerously reprinted, it is noted for the force with which the aphorisms are expressed. This edition, the first for 120 years, is reprinted from that of 1658
