Description

VIII, 819 pp.; 744 pp.; 826 pp. 8vo. Contemp. half calf with 2 spine labels (somewhat scuffed). With ms. exlibris Gaspar Schinz. Paris, Imprimerie Crapelet for Desray Libraire, 1806. First edition of this alphabetically arranged work which is much more than a dictionary, with in-depth articles on certain topics. "Ouvrage recherché et devenu rare" (Fétis). Aubin-Louis Millin (1759-1818) was keeper of medals at the Imperial Library in Paris and a member of many learned societies all over Europe. His writings on art and antiquties were very popular. The owner was presumably the painter Johann Caspar Schinz (1797-1832) from Zurich. - Some old ms. annotations and underlinings in brown ink, some light browning throughout. - Brunet III, 1724 (9116); Quérard, La France littéraire, VI, 136 ("C'est presque une traduction de Sulzer").
