8vo [22 x 14 cm]; 2 volumes, xvi, 296; xii, 336 pp, 16 (of 24) plates, lacking the title page of volume I. a mixed set, volume I in original pictorial cloth, faded, spine worn, volume II a little shorter in contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rubbed, interiors clean and solid, good reading set. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. The title summarizes the book's content. The author travelled extensively through the American West, with the army and with Indian agents, and these excursions formed the basis for his work. He began exhibiting his paintings in 1833, opened his Indian Gallery in New York in 1837 and travelled to England and Europe in 1839, where he exhibited until 1848. (see Hand page 130).
