TWO BOOKS BOUND TOGETHER. Two extremely rare books from the popular 19th century German literary series. The first book is an early (first?) biography of Carl Gutzkow, an eminent German novelist, dramatist and publicist, one of the founders of the Young Germany movement (Junges Deutschland). The second book contains two essays by the notable German historian F.C. Schlosser: 'Geistiges Leben und moralischer Zustand der Griechen in der Zeit vom Beginn der Perser-Kriege an bis auf Alexander den Grossen' and 'Karl der Grosse'. Each book features its author's portrait. 130x90mm. [318]+[118] pages. Hardcover. Cover worn, cover edges worn, corners slightly peeling. Spine worn, spine upper edge missing, hinges partly cracked and coming loose from cover on upper edge. Herder's poem written in ink on first whitepage. Pages yellowing and slightly age-stained. Water stain on first 250 pages upper edge (no damage to text). Gutzkow's portrait page and title-page edges slightly water-stained (no damage to text or portrait). [SUMMARY]: These rare books bound in one volume suffered slight damage (mostly to cover), but remain in good reading condition.
