The author, gold medallist of the Royal Geographical society, explorer, naturalist, describes his travels and hunting over several years in the deserts and mountains of Russian Central Asia with much on the animals and birds of the region, some of which he found were new to science. He describes Bukhara, Samarkand, the inhabitants of ancient Farghana, the Pamirs, the Oxus, High Tartary, etc.
