Description

Photos Werner Kohn.

Bamberg is a town that lives with its history. And in hardly any other German town is history so visible. Bamberg has been called a German Rome thanks to its hills and its churches. It has been extolled as a synthesis of the arts and has been put on a par with Florence, Venice and Prague.
The town on the Regnitz has lost nothing of its attraction right up to the present day. The river forms the link between the bourgeois and the ecclesiastical town. Emperor Henry II and his consort Kunigunde are buried in the cathedral. With its four spires it towers over the diocesan town. Today the thousand-year-old Bamberg is a town throbbing with life with 70,000 inhabitants, a town marked by its cheerful composure and its Baroque zest for life. Two people born in Bamberg, the photographer Werner Kohn and the lawyer Hans Neubauer, have produced a description of their home town, the one with his camera, the other with his pen. The result is a book that, as hardly any other, accurately and sensitively conveys the beauty and the harmony of the urban architecture of Bamberg in coloured photos and descriptive texts. (T-CA)
