Description

4to. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autograph address and red seal. In French. Interesting letter to a high-ranking postal administrator in Vesoul named N.-D. Baulmont, asking him to invite several friends to his farm in La Vaivre on behalf of Moncey, inviting Baulmont himself, and describing the effects of a heat wave on the harvest and his livestock. The surprisingly informal letter starts with the admission that writing is more and more difficult for the ageing Moncey, thus explaining why he wants Baulmont to reach out to his friends in his stead. These are the generals Hélion de Villeneuve-Vence (1783-1834) and Pierre Lanusse (1768-1847), the Marquis de Saint Mars, probably Auguste Jules Edouard de Poilloüe (b. 1799), and the prefect of the Doubs departement, Fortunat Jean Marie Milon de Mesne. Concerning farm work, Moncey writes: "I'll have the oats taken to Vesoul, but we'll have to wait for cooler weather. My herd is plummeting, and I've already lost about fifty of them since the heat of the day, including the most prized ones. I've finished harvesting my grains, and on Monday I'll start fasting" (transl.). - In closing, he mentions investments in the old family farm in Moncey that he was, however, unhappy to finance, accusing his family of unashamedly waiting for him to die: "I'm also building in Moncey at the ancient farm. I need a very strong heart to bleed so much for the benefit of people of such odious ingratitude, who can't even hide their impatience to see me go down to the grave. They should all be ashamed, but far from it, they're swelling with pride; I've never seen anything so despicable." - With traces of former mounting and some browning.
