Description

Lediglich der Schutzumschlag ist leicht berieben, sonst ein sehr gutes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen / Only the dust jacket is slightly rubbed, otherwise a very good copy without annotations. - A shadowy figure from the seventh century BC, Aristeas of Proconnesus was the author of the Arimaspea, a poem describing his journey to Russia and central Asia in search of the Hyperboreans, and his encounters with the Scythians, the Issodonians, and their tales of one-eyed Arimaspi, griffins, swan-maidens, and caves of the wind. Of Aristeas himself there are a few biographical details, the fantastical account of his death and resurrection related by Herodotus, and the Pythagorean legends of his Apollo-possessed ghost and its soul journeys. The Arimaspea is known to us only through fragments quoted by Herodotus and other ancient authors. This study draws together and classifies all the fragments of the poem from ancient texts. It also examines in details its status in antiquity, and all the evidence about Aristeas, his remarkable journey, and his connection with Pythagoras. / Contents LIST OF PLATES I. FOUNDATIONS II.
