8vo [22 x 14.5 cm]; 272, [xxiv, ads with illus] pp, frontis, plates from photos, folding map. original orange pictorial cloth, spine lightly faded, very slight soiling on cover but interior very clean and bright, fine. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Work 52. Conover 1724. The author spent from 1885 to 1924 in the area, dying before the book was published. The anthropologist A. R. Radcliffe-Brown, in the introduction, pays the author tribute as collecting, 'by far the greatest part of the information about native life that we now possess'. With chapters on the totem, family life, kinship, marriage laws and customs, burial customs, childhood, religion, the Badimo, demi-gods, priest craft, ceremonies, sacrifice, folklore, proverbs, history, etc.
