Description

Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjigem Leiter der Aunstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archogischen Instituts. Umschlag leicht defekt, sonst gutes Exemplar. - This is a study of the tenth-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross which stands on the island of Aght'amar in Lake Van, in the southeastern part of present-day Turkey, an area which comprised the ancient Armenian province of Vaspurakan. After sketching the history of the church, Sirarpie Der Nersessian examines the basic plan of the medieval monument, the sculpture adorning its exterior walls, and the paintings in the interior. A brief description of the tombstones that still stand in the cemetery behind the church is included. The author analyzes the theological significance of the style and arrangement of the compositions and relates them to other examples of medieval iconography, Moslem as well as Christian. Her analysis is an important contribution to the study of the development of Near Eastern Christian art.
