A narrative of the author's two journeys across Africa, the first from the Cameroons, Gaboon and following the equator to Lake Victoria to Mombassa, the second somewhat further south through Tanganyika to the River Congo on the Atlantic, to study ethnology and natural history. The author was a well regarded expert on African languages and provided extensive language specimens and relationships of tribes based on language in the appendix.
