About half of the book is devoted to Java and Viet-Nam, while there is lengthy account of a journey to the interior of southern Africa, as well as descriptions of Madeira, the Canary Islands, Rio de Janeiro and Tristan da Cunha. The book therefore takes its place in this series as a superior travel book which provides valuable description and a sense of period. Both its author, Sir John Barrow, and the book were well known in the early nineteenth century, when his observations on South-East Asia were highly regarded by writers and travellers. The glimpses A Voyage to Cochinchina offers of life in Viet-Nam and the sharply delineated picture of Dutch colonial society in Batavia remain of great interest to the modern historian. Mention must also be made of the fine coloured aquatint plates which form such a valuable part of the original publication, representing as they do some of the earliest European pictorial records of Javanese and Vietnamese everyday life.
