Description

2 volumes. The "Second Edition", but in fact an Exact Reprint of the First Edition and done in the same year. Tall 8vo, in three quarter antique black morocco over black boards, the back and corner-pieces and edges gilt ruled, the spines with gilt ruled raised bands creating compartments with gilt centerpieces, two compartments gilt lettered. xv, 518, [11]; xii, 502, [8] pp. A handsome, strong and clean copy, internally quite fresh, crisp and unpressed, the last few leaves of Vol. I a bit aged at the edge and slightly askew, the bindings with some rubbing to the extremities but attractive, firm and completely free of later sophistication.

Edizione: a handsome set of moore's observations during his travels through italy with the duke of hamilton. pine-coffin calls this, "one of the most sober and well balanced views of italy published in the eighteenth century". it is full of amusing accounts, such as the duke and his visit to the pope. his account of venice includes a discussion on the history of the rise and fall of venice as a powerful city-state. the account was very popular in the author's lifetime and now furnish valuable materials to social historians.
