8vo [21.5 x 13.5 cm]; [iv], 363, [i] pp, 10 copper engraved plates including 6 folding (one with tear). contemporary full calf, original leather label with gilt lettering (part of 2 letters rubbed off), gilt decorated spine, joints cracked but firm, corners and spine ends worn, covers rubbed, light foxing on some leaves, very good copy. A picture of this bo The book on Vines was first published in 1790, and the book on the Pineapple was first published in 1779 with only two plates, the two books issued here in one volume with continuous pagination. Gabler G37890. Henry III, 1379 states that 10 plates were all that were issued, although the list of plates states that there are 11, no copies have ever been found with 11 plates. Henry also states (II, 481): "These works by Speechly were the most important on the culture of the pineapple and the vine published during the eighteenth century, and it may be said that they laid the foundation for the improvements which followed." Edward Hyams in his Grapes Under Cloches, referring to English writing on viticulture states: "The best of them all is that of Speechly, a model of the sound, practical, well-written and beautifully printed manual."
