8vo [23 x 15 cm]; xvi, 648, lvi pp, 2 folding maps, 16 etched plates with tissue guards including frontis, 28 other engraved illus. original cloth, gilt spine title lettering, spine ends frayed, corners worn, lightly foxed on some leaves, else very good, with author's presentation inscription to his cousin, signed by author, dated 1845. A picture of this book is available upon request Mendelssohn I, 62: The author visited almost every inhabited town and district in South Africa, 'carefully noting every point of interest in the country and its inhabitants. There is a good description of Kaffraria and of the Basutos, Griquas and Bechuana countries. There is also a narrative of a journey to Great Namaqualand'. The book begins with his three month stay in Mauritius. A good description of the peoples, activities, productions, nature, flora, etc, in all the places he visited.
