8vo [22 x 14 cm]; [viii, ads], [viii], 379, 48 pp, large folding engraved map frontis of Arctic Regions dated 1818, 3 engraved illustrations/plans, with the half title page. later morocco backed marbled boards, gilt spine title lettering & gilt rules, light marginal stain on title & few other pages, faint number in margin, erased and barely perceptible, presentation copy from Arthur's mother 1821, very good, tight, clean. A p A detailed account by prolific author and Arctic expert who had access to the British admiralty papers, describing early voyages to the Arctic, through the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth centuries up to 1818 and the voyages of Ross, Kotzebue, Buchan, Parry and Franklin. The appendices include Buchan's expedition into the interior of Newfoundland (23 pages) and a relation of the discovery of the Strait of Anian made by Captain Maldonado in 1588 (25 pages) with a few illustrations.
