Descripción

Copper engraving, mm 500x590, original colour. Very good condition with minor foxing at centrefold.
Scarce separately issued map of Central America, which is also part of a 6 map set showing the Gulf Coast & Caribbean, but is most often found as a separate map The map details the major ports along the route of the Spanish treasure ships to and from Cartagena and Portobello, both shown as fortified cities. The history of this map is complicated; it was issued separately and as part of a large six-part map illustrating the War of Jenkin's Ear in 1740-41. This is the separately issued state as it contains its own title cartouche. Further, this map is without the course of the treasure fleet, indicating this is an earlier edition. The earliest known advertisements to sell this map date from May, 1740.
Extends from Provincia Honduras to Nova Granadae and St. Martha, centered on Panama & Costa Rica. Highly detailed. Gorgeous old color example of this scarce map of Central America, one of the most detailed of the period.
Joachim Ottens (1663 - 1719) and his sons Renier and Joshua were prominent Dutch booksellers and map publishers from about 1680 to 1790. Joachim, the founder of the firm, was initially employed as a copperplate engraver by Frederick de Wit. In 1711 Joachim founded his own firm. Though Joachim died only a few years later, his sons Renier and Joshua took over the firm and presided over its most prolific period
