Descripción

8vo (194x120 mm). [32], 765, [187] pp. Engraved title page and typographic title page printed in red and black with the printer's device in the center. With a woodcut vignette showing two shields at p. 295 and several engraved portraits placed at the end of each life as tailpieces. At p. 709 begins the section Fragmenta quae reperiri potuerunt omnia. Contemporary gilt vellum over boards bearing the coat-of-arms of the city of Rotterdam in the center of both panels (lacking ties). Worm track to the inner margin that starts at l. 15 and goes up to l. 185 only occasionally affecting the text, some light browning and foxing, a few leaves more strongly browned, all in all a very good, genuine copy gifted as a prize to a student of the Erasmian School of Rotterdam. On the second flyleaf recto there is a long manuscript note that recites: “Joannem Rosterk tertiae in Schola Erasmiana classis discipulum, ob eximiam diligentiam ac progressus, hoc praemio intra ordinem donaverunt Viri amplissimi, Erasmianae Scholae Curatores examine hyberno 1734 D. Van Hogendorp […] A. Tiele 1743 C: Havicius Rectore J. Jensio”.
Nice Leiden edition, edited by Augustinus van Staveren, of Cornelius Nepos' extant books from De viris illustribus with the erudite commentary of many scholars, including Jan Gebhard, Heinrich Ernst and Johann Andreas Bose.
