Eight ideas of space, an exhibition that has emerged from a highly suggestive challenge unpredictable in its outcome: exploration of the relationship between space and the representation of space in contemporary art. With this in mind, eight creative artists were given the opportunity to "occupy" a set space and allowed to use all forms of media and materials: from paint to computers, from virtual reality to architectural installations. This diversity of idioms takes on still greater relevance in view of the different geographical origins and sociocultural contexts of the eight artists participating in this project, which has taken two years of continuous dialogue to materialize. Most of the works on display have been conceived and executed expressly for this exhibition. Toponymies. Eight ideas of space gathers together works by Gerhard Richter, llya Kabakov, Art & Language, Josaldonado, Thierry Kuntzel, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, Julia. Scher, and Fischii I Weiss. The issues attaching to the representation of space in contemporary art have a long tradition behind them. In Toponymies. Eight ideas of space this reflection embodies proposals emanating from such tangible, conspicuously opposing environments as post-Communism (llya Kabakov), Swiss normality (Fischii I Weiss), and the ceremonial rites of the first settlers of the Americas re-created in the work of the Canadian artist Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun. It is unusual for an institution to foster a project that is so long in coming to fruition, and the credit should go to the curator for this exhibition, Josebrero S tais, to whom the Foundation owes a debt of gratitude. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the participating artists and all those persons, institutions, and art galleries who, through their hard work and enthusiastic cooperation, have helped make it possible to make this exhibition into a reality. The Fundacila Caixa" likewise wishes to thank Professor Estrella de Diego for organizing the workshop complementing the exhibits and Professor Marc Auge and the architect Josiguel Prada, for their participation in the workshop. Luis Morirmi.
